Chuckie D's BBQ: A Recipe for Success Built on Family and Community
On the outskirts of St. Johns, Michigan, there's a place where the scent of hickory smoke mingles with the laughter of friends and the warmth of community spirit. Chuckie D's BBQ isn't just a local eatery; it's a culinary haven woven into the fabric of its community, serving up mouthwatering ribs, pulled pork, and savory sauces that keep customers coming back for more. But behind every savory dish lies a heartfelt story of passion, perseverance, and the power of family.
For Chuck DeSander, the man behind the grill, entrepreneurship wasn't just a career choice but a calling. Chuck started his career by putting his marketing management degree to good use but knew he wanted something different long-term. "I got my passion for cooking from my mom," Chuck reflects. His journey into the barbecue world was inspired by more than entrepreneurial ambition; it was rooted in memories of watching his mom work wonders in the kitchen as a child and the thrill of assisting his dad and his friend, Terry Powell Sr., with his first pig roast when he was 12.
Chuck's culinary journey began with small gigs cooking for friends and family, but when he invested in a food truck with Gary Brandenburg, Chuckie D's BBQ took off.
It started as an investment in a truck Gary planned to fix up in Florida. It grew into something else entirely.
"There was a local food event not too far north of here, and I had the idea to bring the truck up," Chuck recalls with a grin. "I drove the truck up and entered it at the event. And it took off." It was a success, and Chuck knew they were on to something special.
Behind the success of Chuckie D's BBQ lies a network of supporters who have played an integral role in its growth. His sister, Tricia Cooper, shares his dedication and work ethic among the many keys to their success. Jeff Lazaros is responsible for the name, a long-time greeting turned title in the form of "Chuckie D's!" Felicia Gingrich's dedication to growth and expansion encourages Chuck to continue expanding his reach and services, as she's always looking for opportunities to touch the community in new ways. He credits Kelsey Slavik of Dershey's Cafe for helping him complete the applications and lining up the required licenses and permits that allowed him to pursue this opportunity seriously. And that's not all, as the Dershem family continued to show up with a smile and a helping hand. "Roger and Diane would show up, and they'd just be there washing dishes or cleaning up, anything just to help out," Chuck adds.
He credits his success to the support of such a phenomenal community. "And, of course, my family – especially my parents, Emojune and Charles DeSander – whose values and work ethic laid the foundation for everything I do."
Family isn't just a theme at Chuckie D's BBQ; it's a way of life. Chuck's son Maveric is a familiar face at the food truck, providing invaluable feedback on the menu, while Trisha's secret cole slaw recipe keeps customers coming back for more. "Family is everything to me," Chuck reflects fondly. "Maveric tells me all the time that this will be his business one day. He's our tester. That's the thing about kids; you can trust them to be honest."
It isn't just about serving up delicious food; it's about making a difference in the community that has embraced it. From sponsoring local events to collaborating with nearby businesses, Chuck is committed to giving back. "For me, it's all about the community," Chuck explains. "It's all worth it if you can make people smile."
Chuck and his wife Michelle are excited to expand deeper into the world of event catering, their next challenge. Scott Dexter spearheads the organization behind booking and planning catering events, and their passion for the project only grows as opportunities continue to arise.
As Chuck looks ahead to the future, his advice for aspiring entrepreneurs is simple yet profound. "Be focused, set your obligations, and keep the fire burning for success," Chuck advises. "Focus on what you want to accomplish, and let that be louder than your fear of failure. Always be happy with what you have and where you are now, and always give back to your community."
So, whether you're a longtime fan or a curious newcomer, there's always room for one more around the table at Chuckie D's BBQ. Come for the mouthwatering barbecue, stay for the sense of family and community that permeates every bite.
